Virechan

What is Virechan Therapy?

The word Virechan means “purgation” or “evacuation”. It is a cleansing treatment designed to eliminate accumulated Pitta and Ama (toxins) from the liver, gallbladder, small intestine, and other areas of the GI tract using herbal laxatives and medicated preparations.

Unlike harsh modern laxatives, Virechan is gentle and done in a supervised, systematic manner to avoid weakness and complications.

Purpose of Virechan:

To eliminate excess Pitta dosha.

To treat Pitta-related diseases such as:

  1. Hyperacidity
  2. Skin disorders (psoriasis, eczema, acne)
  3. Jaundice
  4. Liver disorders
  5. Allergies
  6. Ulcers
  7. Piles and constipation
  8. Chronic headaches and migraines
  9. Hormonal imbalances

Steps Involved in Virechan Therapy:

1)Purva Karma (Preparation phase):

  1. Snehana (oleation): Intake of medicated ghee (internal oleation) for 3–5 days.
  2. Swedana (fomentation): Steam therapy to loosen toxins from tissues.
  3. Light, Pitta-aggravating diet to bring dosha into the digestive tract.

2)Pradhana Karma (Main procedure):

  1. On an empty stomach, a specially chosen herbal purgative (e.g., Trivrit, castor oil, Avipattikar churna) is administered.
  2. Controlled evacuation of bowels begins within a few hours.
  3. The process is monitored until the body expels Pitta toxins completely.

3)Paschat Karma (Post-care):

  1. Special post-therapy diet (Sansarjana Krama) starting with light foods like rice gruel (kanji) for 3–7 days.
  2. Adequate rest and avoidance of mental and physical strain.
  3. Lifestyle and diet regulation for long-lasting benefits
